Lesson 1: Introduction to Potions
Lecture:
Prof. Clemenceau stood at the front of the room waiting patiently as all the first year students hurried in through the wooded door at the back of the classroom. It appeared that most of the first years had found their potions classroom. Prof. Clemenceau motioned for the students to take their seats and he began to talk."Welcome, welcome to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You are my first first year class in over 5 years! So it has been quite a change to see how frightened most first years are on their first day. Your fears will subside and soon like all students Hogwarts castle will be like a second home to you. Let me begin this class today by asking you to show me your supplies. Having all your supplies will be your first homework grade of the term."
Prof. Clemenceau browsed the room as the students took out their potions supplies and placed them on their desk.
"The cauldrons, you can leave here. Everything else needs to come back and forth with you each time you enter this room."
Prof. Clemenceau went to his desk.
"Now, lets move on with the lesson we have a busy day and we've already been here for 10 minutes. Lets start out with the very basics. What is a potion? Can anyone tell me?"
He walked over to a shelf and removed a phial with potion in it and he held it high in the air for all to see.
"Yes, you." He said pointing to the Ravenclaw girl in the back of the room.
"Correct! Potions are magical liquids created by mixing various ingredients in a cauldron according to very specific rules. These mixtures must usually be drunk to give their magical effect. The ingredients in potions range from the mundane to the bizarre and fantastic, and the procedures for creating some potions can be complicated and time-consuming."
He set down the phial and went to his large pewter cauldron sitting atop a fire.
"Gather round!" He said motioning for the students to come around the cauldron.
"I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death. Potions can do about anything for you. Most wizards aren't even aware of the power a simple phial of liquid can hold."
"There are two rules in potion brewing that goes above all other rules. First and most important: Follow the instructions exactly. Without this you can not brew an expectable potion. Not following directions can lead to injure, or even worse death. The second rule is always ask for help if you need it. If you feel like you've done something wrong ask me for help."
He stirred the cauldron and hot brown steam arose from the cauldron as the muddy liquid inside boiled slowly.
"Ah yes, Potions are a wonderful form of magic. However it is bloody complicated and will take a lot of practice to get it right. BUT I have come up with what I call the Three C's to help you better brew potions. These three easy C's will help you throughout the rest of your life to brew outstanding potions that are very potent. So, just what are these three C's? Anyone ever heard of them before?"
He glanced around the room but not one hand shot up. He walked over to the chalk board and wrote down the three C's.
Chauncey's 3 C's to Easy Potion Brewing
- Color
- Content
- Concentration
"These are what makes brewing so easy. If you get these right, you get the potion right! So let me break it down for you."
He said as he walked around the dungeon classroom.
"Color simply means what color is the potion at any particular time during the brewing process. Many times the book will give you an idea of what the color should be either before or after adding a certain ingredient. Many times the color is a tell-tale sign that you made a mistake by adding too much or too little of a certain ingredient."
He went up to the podium.
"Concentration is whether or not the ingredients added are thoroughly mixed throughout the entire potion composition. Concentration is also important because you do not want a high concentration of a certain ingredient in one area. This could cause the color to be uneven and then the potion will not turn out."
He underlined concentration.
"The final "C" is content, you must put the right amount and right ingredients into the mixture, anything other than exact could spell disaster. The ingredients must be exact according to the directions, only a skilled potion master should attempt substitutes and even then it's extremely dangerous."
He erased the board and sat down at his desk.
"The next thing to discuss today, is how to brew a potion. For the purposes of this course, we will be using the the Hogwarts Online forum. In the forum area, all of my announcements will be pinned. The 'cauldrons' which are simply topics where you will role play or story tell the brewing process. I will set up an example 'cauldron' so that you will know the format.
Finally, for the potions that you will brew, I will give you two scenarios per potion to make the brewing a bit more challenging. However, there is no wrong answer to the scenarios. I will brew the potion with you in class, then you will be on your own to brew the potion as I have done, except there will be a few things that go wrong. You will need to try to problem solve using the 3 C's. All I am looking for is creativity and critical thinking. You will be given points on how well you role play and how creative you are, not if you are right or wrong. "
As he said this the bell rang to signal the end of classes.
"HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY EVERYONE!" *He yelled as the students exicted.
